Are you a writer? Journaling, memoir, fiction, poetry, non-fiction — whatever you feel drawn to create. Sometimes I find it helpful to retreat into an inner sanctuary that puts me into the right mood. Here is the first part of a series that not only guides into nature-inspired imagery but also offers related writing prompts.

THE ROSE GARDEN
Visualize an enclosure in your GARDEN. A natural stone wall, not too hight, shields this area from its surroundings. You enter it through an arbor of climbing roses. Then you see an ocean of roses. Myriad shades of red and pink, also white and yellow, if you wish. Some flowers are budding, some just opening, others wide open. Rosebushes grow in clusters or rows, some are exquisite and delicate, others exuberant, exposing their beauty with pride.
A powerful sensation of joy and wellbeing engulfs you. Walk around and admire the flowers, touch their velvety pedals, and inhale their heavenly scent. Then be still. Listen to humming bees, the songs of birds. It is a beautiful summer day, warm, but not hot.
Maybe you want to sit down on a comfortable bench. Spend some time making everything just right for you in this place. Then relax. Just being in your rose garden can be a healing experience.
Writing prompts
- Close your eyes, relax, and imagine a large, freshly cut rose flower in your favorite color placed on the center of your chest, the heart chakra. (If you wish, massage some rose essential oil into that area before you settle down). Sense the softness, the sweetness, the fragrance. Now breathe slowly through this sacred circle, let its energy melt with your heart. What are you feeling? What body sensations, emotions, and words are coming up? Maybe a happy or a sad memory emerges? Write your experience down in your journal and/or create a poem or a story.
- Place yourself into your rose garden. When you are ready, invite a guest for a healing “heart to heart” talk. This can be somebody you love with all your heart or somebody who is in a difficult relationship with you. Speak your truth and listen. Then write the conversation down as a dialogue.
- Write a short essay about the similarities and differences between human and divine love.
